Telomerase, animation. Telomerase is an enzyme made of protein and RNA (ribonucleic acid) subunits that elongates chromosomes, forming a cap known as a telomere. The first two frames show a telomerase molecule (yellow) adding thymine (T) and guanine (G) bases onto the end of the leading strand of the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecule. Telomeres protect the ends of the chromosome and play a key role in cell ageing. In the final frame DNA polymerase binds to this DNA strand and continues the process of DNA replication.
