Chromosomal crossover, animation. The crossing-over of homologous chromosomes takes place during the prophase stage of cell division. The first frame shows two pairs of chromosomes. In the second and third frames these are cut and resealed at points known as chiasmata. The final frame shows the resulting recombined chromosomes.
