Spider silk protein research. Professor Randolph Lewis of the University of Wyoming, USA, carrying out spider silk protein research. Spider silk has great strength and elasticity and this research is aimed at studying the genetics of spiders and their silk proteins to produce new silks. These new silks will be produced by genetically modifying other organisms such as plants, bacteria, and silkworms. Applications for the new spider silks include bullet-proof vests, aerospace biomaterials, tennis racket strings, airbags, and surgical suture threads.
