Death of Inca ruler Atahualpa. 16th-century artwork of the Inca Emperor Atahualpa (seated at right, c.1502-1533) being killed on 29 August 1533 by Spanish conquistadors led by Francisco Pizarro. Atahualpa is being strangled to death using a garotte. Atahualpa had been captured on 16 November 1532 after meeting the Spanish at Cajamarca (in what is now Peru). Huge amounts of gold, silver and jewels were given as a ransom. However, fearing attack from the Incas, Pizarro had Atahualpa executed after a trial (background).
