Archimedes' screw. Artwork of the screw-based water pump said to have been devised by 3rd-century BC Greek engineer Archimedes of Syracuse. It consists of a screw thread inside a hollow shaft. As the screw is turned with the handle (upper right), water at the lower end is raised to the higher end. The device was used for irrigation of farmlands.
