North Polar region, Dunhuang Star Chart. Dunhuang Star Chart. This Chinese star chart was among thousands of manuscripts found in the Mogao Caves near Dunhuang in north-western China. Dating from around 700 AD, it consists of 13 panels arrayed from right-to-left on a scroll, showing the positions of 1345 stars. This image shows the thirteenth panel which uses a circular rather than cylindrical projection. The Big Dipper shape at lower centre is a star formation that forms part of the modern constellation of Ursa Major. The Chinese text names the stars.
