Scene as it would appear to a patient with macular degeneration. This eye disorder, which is usually age-related, affects the macula, an area near the centre of the retina. Degeneration of the macula leads to loss of vision at the centre of the field of view. It rarely causes complete loss of vision, but can lead to legal blindness. For a view of the same scene from the perspective of a patient with normal vision, see image BU5147.
