Spittlebugs, Philaenus sp. These are in genus Philaenus, the meadow spittlebugs. Named from the spittle-like froth the immature insects secrete to help protect them from predators and dessication. Some of the froth has been removed to show the insect. This is a very widespread family of true bugs belongng to Order Homoptera, family Cercopidae - although some authorities place them in family Aphrophoridae. Photo Bosque Co., TX.
