Plate from 18th century encyclopedia showing various navigational instruments. Such instruments are used by nautical navigators and pilots as tools of their trade. The purpose of navigation is to ascertain the present position and to determine the speed, direction etc. Including in the illustration are; compass, azimuth compass, knights compass, dipping needle, backstaff, forestaff, hadley's quadrant, astolabe, and various sunisighting diagrams.
