Plate from 18th century encyclopedia showing light raypaths through lenses and prisms, a magic lantern and a camera. Also shown is a method for calculating the height of buildings by using the shadows it casts by the sun. Also shown are 2 illustrations of catoptric cistulas, a box with several sides lined with mirrors, so as to magnify or multiply images of any object placed inside the box. Of these, there are various kinds for various purposes, such as magnification, deformation, or multiplication of images.
