A catapult is a device used to throw or hurl a projectile a great distance without the aid of explosive devices. Using potential energy stored in a rope spring, the catapult is able to throw a projectile. Popular as a medieval siege weapon it was able to destroy castle walls. Catapults were invented by the ancient Greeks.
