Colorized Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of negatively-stained leprosy bacteria. Mycobacterium leprae exhibit characteristic ropelike structures (mycolic acids) which are responsible for acid-fast reaction, the most distinctive property of the genus. Magnification x21,000 at 70mm.
