Linear-taper potentiometer. A potentiometer is a type of variable resistor. Rotating the shaft varies the resistance to electric current across the contacts at top. Potentiometers are used in such devices as light dimmers and volume controls. Linear taper describes the electrical characteristic of this particular potentiometer, and is used when a proportional relationship is desired between shaft rotation and the division ratio of the potentiometer.
