A molecular ribbon model of myoglobin, a protein found in muscle tissue that binds to iron and oxygen. Although structurally similar to haemoglobin, found in red blood cells, myoglobin is only found in the blood stream if a muscle is injured. High concentrations of myoglobin allow the organism to utilize greater stores of oxygen if holding its breath, and also provides the red pigmentation to muscle and meat.
