A molecular model of isoleucine, an essential amino acid that cannot be synthesized in the body but can be obtained by eating foods such as eggs, soy, chicken, fish and cheese. Isoleucine acts as a glucogenic amino acid, leading to the production of glucose, as well as a ketogenic amino acid which leads to the synthesis of ketone bodies. Atoms are coloured dark grey (carbon), light grey (hydrogen), red (oxygen) and blue (nitrogen).
