A molecular model of erythropoietin, a glycoprotein hormone, produced by the kidneys, that regulates red blood cell production (erythropoiesis) in the bone marrow. In high endurance sports, performance enhancing drugs may be used to stimulate erythropoietin production to increase red blood cell count. As a result, the athlete can deliver greater amounts of oxygen to their cells, giving them a better advantage.
