A molecular illustration of carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas formed by two oxygen atoms covalently bonded to a carbon atom. Carbon dioxide can be used by plants during photosynthesis to produce energy and release oxygen as a biproduct. It can also be produced during respiration or released during combustion of substances like coal. Earth's atmosphere contains about 0.039% of carbon dioxide, however high amounts of CO2 can contribute to greenhouse gas effects of global warming and climate change.
