A molecular model of cholesterol, a precursor to various steroid hormones as well as molecule essential for building and maintaining cell membranes. Cholesterol can be synthesized or ingested from food containing animal fats, which will influence blood-cholesterol levels of high density lipoproteins (HDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL). Higher LDL levels in the blood can often times lead to cardiovascular disease, and may prompt a change in dietary intake of saturated fats and food containing high amounts of cholesterol. Atoms are colored dark gray (carbon), light gray (hydrogen) and red (oxygen).
