Star trails over rock art. Time-exposure image of stars moving around the celestial north pole, marked by the Polaris (the Pole Star) above prehistoric rock art (petroglyphs) in the valley of Teimareh, Iran. Star trails are formed by the apparent motion of the stars in the sky as the Earth rotates on its axis. The Teimareh valley is full of ancient petroglyphs, dating from 4500 to 17000 years ago. With about 20,000 engraved images, the region is one of the world's most diverse petroglyph sites.
