Jew's ear fungus (Auricularia auricula-judae). This edible, ear-shaped fungus is gelatinous when fresh but dries to become hard and horny. Its outer surface (the underside is shown here) is covered with minute, downy, greyish hairs. It is found throughout the year on the branches of trees such as the elder.
