Bee simple eye, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This ocellus is one of three simple eyes (ocelli) located on the top of a bee's head. These are much smaller than the paired compound eyes on each side of the head. The ocelli are thought to aid stability during flight as well as monitoring light levels. Magnification: x150 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
