Ferdinand duc d'Orleans, (1810-1842), was the eldest son and heir of King Louis-Philippe. He was a successful military leader, and popular with the public because of his liberal political vews. He was killed after being thrown from a light carriage, ending the hopes of the Orleans dynasty after the abdication of Louis-Philippe and the establishment of the short-lived Second Republic of 1848.
