Caption

Polarised light micrograph of crystals of haematoxylin, a chemical used as a stain in light microscopy. Biological thin sections are usually transparent and so low in contrast that they need to be stained in order to produce a satisfactory image. H&E (Haematoxylin & Eosin) stain is widely used in light microscopy of human and animal tissue. Photographed from a slide prepared by J.B. Dancer (c. 1850). Magnification x25 at 6x6cm size.
