Alcoholic cirrhosis. Light micrograph of tissue from a liver in a case of alcoholic cirrhosis. Excessive alcohol consumption causes liver damage (cirrhosis). Damage includes the accumulation of fat, and the formation of bands of fibrous tissue (light pink). These features reduce the efficiency of the liver, and may lead to jaundice and oedema. Abstaining from alcohol may allow the liver to heal itself, but continued drinking can lead to liver failure. Magnification: x280 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
