Cell membrane. Computer artwork of a section though a cell membrane. This is a semi-permeable membrane that controls what substances leave and enter the cell. It consists of a phospholipid bilayer with proteins embedded in it. The proteins facilitate the movement of larger molecules, either through active or passive transport. Carbohydrates (long, thin) on the membrane surface facilitate cell signalling.
