Polarised light micrograph of butanedioic acid, a colourless, crystalline, water-soluble fatty acid. Also known as succinic acid, it occurs in living organisms as an intermediate in metabolism. It is produced by the fermentation of sugar or ammonium tartrate and is used as a sequestrant and in making dyes. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size.
