Transport of synaptic vesicles. Animation of vesicles (green) moving along microtubules (red) in the axon of a neuron (nerve cell). Vesicles are the transport packages of the cell. Vesicles containing neurotransmitter chemicals are seen budding from the Golgi apparatus (purple) and traveling to the synaptic button (right). From here they release the neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft between the neuron and its neighbouring cell (red). The vesicles can be recycled, and so travel back along microtubules to the Golgi apparatus.
