Ruby laser. Artwork of the internal mechanism of the first working laser, known as the ruby laser because of the ruby crystal used (left) to produce a beam of red light (right). The acronym LASER stands for 'light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation'. The laser was developed in 1960 and laser technology is now widely used, such as in medicine, surgery, telecommunications, the military, industry, DVDs, computers, and scientific research.
