False-coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph of a cross-section through the interface bewteen bone (coloured) and a metal orthopaedic implant (white). Implants such as artificial hips, knees, shoulders and ankles typically employ a micro-structured surface designed to allow bone tissue to grow into the gaps within the metal, effecting a strong bond between the bone and the implant.
