Total solar eclipse, composite image. Total solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun. This composite of 25 images shows second and third contacts (Baily's beads), solar prominences and the Sun's inner corona (the solar atmosphere). This total solar eclipse was observed near Novosibirsk, Russia, on 1 August 2008.
