Caption

Endoscope view of cancer of the oesophagus (gullet), showing the growth partially blocking the lumen of the oesophagus. This is a squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer arising from cells lining the upper part of the oesophagus. Oesophageal cancer typically causes painful and difficult swallowing. By the time these symptoms develop the cancer is usually quite advanced, and the prognosis is not good. Squamous cell carcinoma in the oesophagus is associated with heavy alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking.
