Caption

Endoscope view of cancer of the oesophagus (gullet) blocking the passage to the stomach. A small claw is used to take a sample of the growth for a biopsy. This is an adenocarcinoma, a cancer arising from glandular cells near the junction with the stomach. Oesophageal cancer typically causes painful and difficult swallowing. By the time these symptoms develop the cancer is usually quite advanced, and the prognosis is not good. Adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus is associated with chronic gastric reflux, where stomach acid damages the lower part of the oesophagus.
