Endoscope view of cancer of the oesophagus (gullet), showing food unable to pass down to the stomach (oesophageal retention) due to the tumour blocking the oesophagus. This is an adenocarninoma, a cancer arising from glandular cells near the junction with the stomach. Oesophageal cancer typically causes painful and difficult swallowing. By the time these symptoms develop the cancer is usually quite advanced, and the prognosis is not good. Adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus is associated with chronic gastric reflux, where stomach acid damages the lower part of the oesophagus.
