Mayer, Goeppert-Mayer and Born. US physical chemist Joseph Edward Mayer (1904-1983, left), German-US nuclear physicist Maria Mayer (1906-1972, nee Goeppert) and German physicist Max Born (1882-1970, right) at Born's home in Bad Pyrmont, West Germany, in September 1964. Mayer is best known for his work on the thermodynamics of ionic crystals. He met Maria in Germany and they married in 1930 and moved to the USA. Maria shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 for her contribution to the Nuclear Shell Model. Born, one of her doctoral advisors, shared the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics for work on quantum mechanics.
