Hertha Dorothea Elisabeth Sponer (1895-1968, left) and Otto Oldenberg (1888-1983, right), German physicists, standing by a car in a street. Sponer studied at the University of Tubingen, and then at the University of Gottingen. It was at Tubingen that she met her future husband and fellow physicist, James Franck (they married in 1946). A pioneer for women in science, she worked on quantum and molecular physics. Oldenberg worked as Professor of Physics at Gottingen University and later (from 1929) as a lecturer at Harvard University. He became a professor at Harvard in 1930 and retired in 1955.
