Shirley Ann Jackson (born 1946, lower right), in her role as Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Jackson, US physicist and university administrator, graduated from MIT in 1968. She gained her PhD and carried out research in subatomic physics in the USA and Europe. Her later research was on semiconductor physics. She was Chairman of the NRC from 1995 to 1999, the first woman and first African-American person to hold that role. Since 1999, she has served as President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Married to fellow physicist Morris A. Washington, she received the Vannevar Bush Award in 2007 for her public service work.
