Hydrocephalus in newborn baby. Also known also as 'water on the brain', skull enlargement occurs due to pressure from excess fluid within cavities of the brain. This condition requires intensive care after birth. In most cases, treatment involves draining excess fluid away from the brain by using a shunt (tube) inserted into the skull. If the condition is not treated in time, brain damage may occur. This photograph was taken at the neonatal pathology department of the Kemerovo children's clinical hospital, Kemerovo, Russia. The photograph was awarded the gold medal of the 'Nature and Ecology' series at the Interpressfoto-94 exhibition.
