Hearing aid worn by an eight year old boy. The patterned device is the sound processor for a cochlear implant. Sound processed by this device is passed to a transmitter on the scalp that sends the information to electrodes implanted in the cochlea of the inner ear. The electrical impulses from the cochlea are passed to the brain, allowing the person to hear. This boy's hearing loss was caused by a meningitis infection at eight months old.
