Standing and travelling waves, animation. Standing, or stationary, waves (black) are confined to a given space, while travelling waves (green and red) aren't. The peaks and troughs of the standing wave oscillate around the same point. The peaks and troughs of the travelling wave move through a medium at a constant speed, when it meets a boundary the wave is reflected.
