JAXA solar power orbiter. Artwork showing the orbiting solar power system proposed by the Japanese space agency (JAXA). Known as the SBSP system, it is scheduled to be launched in 2020. It takes the form of a satellite that operates in geostationary orbit above the equator. Chromium-enhanced solar cells absorb energy, while neodymium plates are used to transfer the energy to Earth in the form of laser beams. It is thought that one such SBSP satellite would generate enough energy to power 500,000 homes.
