Animals and laws of motion. Artwork showing examples of three types of animal motion, all of which can be explained by Newton's laws of motion, particularly the third: 'every action has an equal and opposite reaction'. This explains a bird flying through the air (top), a pond skater moving across the surface of the water (middle), and a fish moving through water (bottom). In each case, the animal is pushing against a medium (air, surface tension, and water). The resulting forces are called action and reaction forces (blue and white arrows).
