Large intestine, artwork. This section of the human digestive system (gastrointestinal tract) starts at the caecum (lower left), the location of the ileocaecal valve between the large and small intestines. The sections are the ascending colon (left), the transverse colon (across top), the descending colon (right), the sigmoid colon (lower right) and the rectum (lower centre). Water from food residues is absorbed in the colon and faeces are stored in the rectum before being expelled through the anus (bottom centre). The small projection at lower left, is the appendix.
