Francois Baron Englert (born 1932), Belgian physicist (left). Englert is a theoretical physicist who was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics in 2013, along with the British physicist Peter Higgs (born 1929). The prize was for their work on the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism, which explains how subatomic particles are given mass through their interaction with the Higgs field. Here, Englert has just received the Francqui Prize, the highest scientific award in Belgium. Left to right: François Englert, former wife Danielle Vindal, Professor Englert's friend and collaborator Robert Brout, King Baudouin of Belgium. Photographed in 1982.
