Erik the Red statue, Greenland. Erik the Red, real name Erik Thorvaldsson (950 - c.1003), founded the first Norse settlement in Greenland. Born in Iceland, he is credited as the first European to form a permanent settlement in Greenland, though the country had been discovered previously by other explorers.
