Cholesterol genetics research. Chemists using real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) methods to analyse the activity of laboratory animal genes that may affect cholesterol levels. Raised levels of cholesterol can be a risk factor for conditions such as heart disease. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the US Department of Agriculture. Photographed in the Western Regional Research Center, Albany, California, USA.
