Botulinum toxin protein research. Biologist using protein gel electrophoresis to separate crude botulinum toxin into individual protein bands. This will help identify which protein components affect toxicity. Botulinum toxin is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is extremely lethal and can kill humans who contract botulism, usually through food poisoning. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the US Department of Agriculture. Photographed in the USA.
