Nikolai Kibalchich (1853-1881), Russian journalist, revolutionary and rocket scientist. While awaiting execution for the assassination of Tsar Alexander II, Kibalchich wrote a paper on the possibility of using rockets for space exploration. He proposed propelling the manned rocket with a solid-fuel engine. The designs did not become widely known until 1918, after the Russian revolution.
