Graafian follicle. Light micrograph of a section through a human ovary showing a Graafian follicle (large round area, centre). Within the follicle is the developing oocyte (small brown circle), surrounded by the discus proligerus (blue), a membrane of granulosa cells. Also within the follicle is a fluid-filled cavity (white), known as the follicular antrum. The oocyte becomes an ovum (egg cell) when it is released into the oviduct (fallopian tube).
