Molluscum contagiosum. Light micrograph of a section through skin showing molluscum contagiosum (MC), a viral skin infection caused by the DNA pox virus molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). The infection is highly contagious. MC most commonly affects children and young adults, although it can occur at any age. Usually, the only symptom is a number of small, firm, raised papules (spots) that develop on the skin. They are not painful but may be itchy. Characteristic round viral containing molluscum bodies are present in the epidermis. Magnification: x 60 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
