Intestinal villi. Light micrograph of a section through the villi of the human small intestine. The yellow columnar absorptive epithelial cells and purple goblet secretory cells make up the mucosa. The pink submucosa consists of connective tissue and blood vessels. Villi are projections that increase the surface area for the absorption of food. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
